TECHNICAL EXERCISES 1-6
TECH EX 06
This exercise was about learning the basics of stop motion and the many different types. Today we learned how to build a stop motion clip using frames. With the many frames, we shortened the duration of each frame to create a much more rapid sequence. We created nested clips and lined up the clips so it was consequential. We added some small edits to the frames to ensure it felt cohesive throughout. Using the frames you have a lot of flexibility to move things around and hide any mistakes. Of course, we added our black screen to the beginning and end of the clips, along with a title page of our choice. Here we used our creative freedom to choose the typography and title of the clip. We were also tasked with choosing music to go along with the clip and to ensure it was cohesive. I went with this very relaxed and goofy music found on freesound.org.
TECH EX 05
This technical exercise was about the technique of masking. Masking is used to highlight or draw attention to certain areas of a video. In this exercise we highlighted the tea kettle and applied a mask to it in Premiere Pro. First you outline the object using the path tool, and use the system’s algorithm abilities to follow the outlined path throughout the video. We made a copy of the clip so there was 2 clips playing at the same time, and then applied a tinting effect to the kettle. We used a colour of our choice to draw attention to the kettle and played around with feathering and expansion to ensure the mask wasn’t too harsh of a line and to cover up any obvious flaws. I did complete this exercise last year, but felt like I needed a refresher for this one.
TECH EX 04
This exercise was all about the split screen technique. This technique has been used in cinema for decades and this week we learned the basics. We started with layering two clips and updating the opacity to be able to see both clips simultaneously. We created a nested clip to revert to a single clip for easier usage and editing. We followed the same nesting technique to do the same with with the lemon clip and inverted the view point for interest. We utilized the position feature along with key frames to time the clip position effectively. Lastly, we used a colour matte frame to add an additional split screen and used the same position technique to keep all the clips in unison. You can see there is a lot that can be done with key frames and timing and this exercise was a little taste of it.
TECH EX 03
For this audio exercise we went through the basics of editing audio footage. We played around with sound volume to ensure it doesn’t hurt listeners ears. We looked at removing dialogue sections and “ums”, to be replaced with the natural background noise of the footage. I used the audio layers to layer to the audio footage to sound seamless, and played with repairing the audio and reduce noise. My favorite part was cutting and repeating audio sections to have a fun and futuristic ending.
TECH EX 02
This exercise was all about learning the basics of using the green screen technique to create special background effects. For this exercise, it started with the woman in front of the green screen and utilizing Adobe’s Premiere Pro, I layered the dessert shot underneath seen in the video. I used a couple of video effects to help make the video look as seamless as possible. We looked at lighting, saturation, position, and more to create this effect and it turned out not bad for my first time.
TECH EX 01
This Technical exercise was all about the basics of using Adobe’s Premiere Pro. I created this video with pre set video and audio files. The content was edited together to create a mini video. I added video transitions, sped up video, slowed down video, added audio, and included a black screen for the beginning and end. The results are a very ominous and creepy with the edits but I had fun putting it all together.
